The Linkages Index provides the first ever composite score for measuring countries performance on SRH and HIV Linkages. The creation of a complex heat map, to visualise the vast amount of data was a technical challenge… even for our experienced development team.
From a design point of view, the project threw up lots of challenges. Standard colour schemes you associate with heat maps needed to be avoided, whilst the range of colours used had to be significant enough to create clear differentiation when viewing results.
The data was provided as a single Excel document with domain scores and combined index scores on one sheet and the raw indicator figures on another sheet. A content management system specifically designed to accept uploaded CSV files auto-populates the index database. The World map uses a Java Script library, which was manually tweaked to update the ever changing country boundaries, necessary before the World Health Organization (WHO) would approve the site.
